Promoting University-Community Collaboration in Planning Specific Activities/Events
Other sections of this web site contain descriptions of the diversity of ways in which Boise State researchers and community leaders will be working together in the area of family studies. In this way, the Family Studies Research Initiative hopes to promote university-collaboration in areas of common interest (e.g., domestic violence, economic stresses on families, suicide prevention). In addition, the Advisory Board for the Family Studies Research Initiative - composed of university researchers and community leaders -- organize a yearly activity/event. For example, together with the BSU Service-learning program, the Family Studies Initiative has co-sponsored a poster exhibit on "Civic Engagement in Action" at the end of each semester. In Fall 2005, the Family Studies Research Initiative organized a symposium on Tough Transitions for Idaho Teens that brought together researchers, community agencies, and policy makers. In Fall 2006, the Family Studies Research Initiative hosted a symposium entitled "Fact or Fiction: Research on Sexual Orientation, Society, and the Family" that brought together researchers, community agencies, and policy makers together to discuss the marriage amendment on the ballot in November 2006. In 2007, the Family Studies Research Initiative is working with a local agency, KIDSCOUNT to host a symposium concerning children's well-being, including their educational status, mental health, physical health, and substance use and abuse.

The Advisory Board for the Family Studies Research Initiative represents a diverse group of professionals interested in families who come together to collaborate or develop partnerships as specific opportunities (e.g., research projects, grants) arise.
